Tips for Smart Consumption

Let's face it, todays' world is one that is consumer driven and that is just the way it is. Everywhere we look we are being told or made to buy something. That is why we need tips for smart consumption. Ways that we can indulge ourselves in consumerism without breaking the bank or going overboard.

At the Supermarket

When at the Supermarket, peruse for sales for items that you would already buy. Don't fall into buying things that would normally not be on your shopping list just because they are new or on sale. Stick to your original plans and don't fall into sales traps, and impulse buying. Look for sales on fresh food that is closer to expiry than some of the other fruits and buy in season when fruits and vegetables are cheaper. If you are buying personal hygiene items such as sanitary napkins, tampons, makeup etc. you can often purchase items that have coupons for other like products to save money as you have to buy them again.

For Hobby and Entertainment Spending

Find a hobby that doesn't require you to replenish too much overtime. For example drawing is quite cheap with only the expensive of a sketch book here and there and some pencils or chalks. Board games only require the initial throw in of purchasing a board game. The same can be said of video games where you only have to purchase the console and game initially or only the game if you already have a PC and then you can play for hours for free. Exercise is also a nice hobby that won't cost you an arm and a leg and is good for your health as well as your wallet. Books and Netflix are also other great things to keep your budget for entertainment low. A kindle with Amazons wide selection of free classics and low priced books in general will leave you with hours of entertainment. Netflix is a low $7.99 a month and you can watch all the television and movies you like as long as you have an internet connection. This is a much more reasonable rate that going out to the movies every weekend. Not that you can't do that once and a while when a favorite pops up.

For Children's Activities

Keep some low cost craft materials on hand (construction paper, crayons, markers, popcicle sticks, egg cartons paper plates) and have craft time with your kids. Also you can take walks in the park and play the same games and board games with them as you would play yourself. Purchasing a kindle and taking advantage of the free classic books on amazon can really help with keeping children (as well as adults) occupied and entertained for long periods of time.

I hope that these tips will help you be a wiser consumer and keep a little money in your wallet while still enjoying the pleasures of life.
